Lesson explanation
After this lesson, you will be able to:
Pythonic code is not code with the fewest characters. It is code that communicates the intention clearly using Python's tools.
Use a comprehension to build a new collection. Use a normal for loop when your goal is a visible side effect, such as printing each row, or when several pieces of state change in one iteration. Use zip() for genuinely aligned sequences, enumerate() when the number matters, and sorted() to return a new ordered list without mutating the source.
A common data bug appears when you filter two aligned lists separately: their remaining positions can stop matching. Pair related values first, then filter the combined records.
A reliable report is usually assembled in clear stages: normalize → select → transform → order → report. Materialize an intermediate collection when you must inspect it twice; otherwise use a generator expression for a one-pass aggregate or check.
For a readiness result, all() alone is not enough if an empty set of checks must count as blocked. State the business rule explicitly: require non-empty checks and every check to pass.
raw_regions = [" US ", "eu", " APAC "]
regions = [region.strip().lower() for region in raw_regions]
print(regions)
print(raw_regions[0])Output:
['us', 'eu', 'apac']
US The input remains untouched; the new list holds normalized values.
jobs = ["api", "queue", "mail"]
owners = ["Maya", "Omar", "Lina"]
active_pairs = [(job, owner) for job, owner in zip(jobs, owners) if job != "queue"]
print(active_pairs)Output:
[('api', 'Maya'), ('mail', 'Lina')]Filtering the pairs together preserves which owner belongs to which job.
services = ["api", "db"]
for position, service in enumerate(services, start=1):
print(f"{position}. {service}")Output:
1. api
2. dbA normal loop is clearer than a comprehension used only for printing.
checks = ["PASS", "pass"]
normalized = [item.strip().lower() for item in checks]
ready = bool(normalized) and all(item == "pass" for item in normalized)
print(f"Ready: {ready}")Output:
Ready: TrueIf the checks list were empty, the bool(normalized) guard would prevent an accidental ready result.
| Intention | Readable option |
|---|---|
| Construct a new collection | List / dict / set comprehension |
| Print or update several counters | Normal for loop |
| Combine aligned inputs | zip() before filtering |
| Get numbers for report rows | enumerate(..., start=1) |
| Sort without mutating the source | sorted(..., key=...) |
| Aggregate once | Generator expression with sum() / any() / all() |
| Confirm a non-empty batch passed | bool(items) and all(...) |
zip().all([]) means a real batch was checked.
